EOK / STAFF German courses
What are EOK / STAFF courses?
In EOK and STAFF German courses as an introductory and orientation offer, you will receive information in 300 or 400 teaching units about living together in Germany and about important everyday topics, such as
- Health and medical care,
- transportation and mobility,
- work,
- social contacts.
In the EOK and STAFF German courses, you will learn the German language so that you can communicate independently in everyday life and find your way around.
EOK and STAFF German courses end with an exam (A1, A2, A2-B1).
Who can take part in an EOK / STAFF course?
You may take part in EOK and STAFF German courses if
- you have immigrated to Germany or have fled to Germany and
- live in Schleswig-Holstein and
- are an adult and do not have to go to school (are not of compulsory school age) and
- if you are not (yet) able to take part in an integration course.
As soon as you receive a place on an integration course, you must leave the EOK or STAFF German course.

Integrationskurse
What is an Integrationskurs?
The Integrationskurs is the primary course offered for learning the German language.
It consists of a language course and an orientation course. The language course lasts 600 teaching units in the general Integrationskurs, up to 900 teaching units in the special courses and 400 teaching units in the intensive course.
In the language course you will learn German and deal with important everyday topics, for example
- Shopping,
- living,
- work and career,
- health and
- leisure time.
The language course concludes with the “Deutschtest für Zuwanderer” (DTZ A2/B1) exam with the goal of B1.
If you do not pass the exam with B1, you can repeat 300 teaching units once and take the exam again.
In 100 teaching units, the orientation course teaches you about the basic values of society, the political system, culture and history of Germany. This is followed by the “Leben in Deutschland” (LiD) test. Upon successful completion of the “Leben in Deutschland” test and the language course with an overall result of B1, you will receive the “Integrationskurs Zuertifikat”.
This certifies that you have sufficient knowledge of German and basic knowledge of the German legal and social system and living conditions in Germany.
Who can take part in an Integrationskurs?
You may take part in an Integrationskurs if you are legally and (probably) permanently resident in Germany and do not have sufficient knowledge of the German language (below B1). You can be admitted to an integration course if you
- have a residence permit,
- have a residence permit,
- have a discretionary toleration (§60a Abs. 2 Satz 3 AufenthG): this also includes the training toleration (§60c AufenthG) and employment toleration (§ 60d AufenthG),
- are an EU citizen,
- are a late repatriate.
You can receive support with an application for admission to an Integrationskurs from language course providers and migration advice centers, for example.

Berufssprachkurse
What is a Berufssprachkurs?
The Berufssprachkurse (BSK) prepare you for the world of work with job-related German lessons. In addition to general Berufssprachkurse with the target language level A2 to C2, there are also specialist language courses, courses specifically in the context of professional recognition procedures in the field of academic medical professions and healthcare professions, as well as courses specifically for trainees (Azubi-BSK) and employees (Job-BSK).
Who can take part in a Berufssprachkurs?
You meet the requirements for participating in a Berufssprachkurs if you are an immigrant, an EU citizen or a German citizen with a history of immigration and
- are looking for training
- are registered as unemployed or looking for work and/or
- need further language training for your profession or for professional recognition.
In order to participate in a course with target language level A2 and B1, you must also have already completed an Integrationskurs.
If you have the status of a Duldung nach §4 Abs. 1 Satz 2 Nr. 3 and do not have access to Integrationskurse, you can generally participate directly in a Berufssprachkurs with the target language level A2 or B1 after at least 6 months of tolerated stay have elapsed.
How do you obtain an authorization to participate?
To take part in a Berufssprachkurs in accordance with §45a AufenthG, you need an authorization to participate.

- looking for training
the job center/employment agency responsible for you is the office that can issue you with a participation permit.
Get in touch with your contact person at the job center/employment agency.
Discuss whether participation in a vocational language course is necessary and useful for your career path.

- employed
- in an Ausbildung
- in a professional recognition procedure?
Then apply directly to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) for authorization to participate.

Language training for work and Ausbildung
The advisory networks B.O.A.T. and Alle an Bord! offer labor market-related language training with 2 teaching units per week on site and online. They prepare you for the job market and support you if you are already in work or training. The language training courses are not a substitute for the Integrationskurs or Berufssprachkurs.

Examinations
At the State Association of Adult Education Centers of Schleswig-Holstein, you can find exam dates for:
- German A1,
- German A2,
- German A2-B1,
- German B1,
- German B2,

- German C2.

Einbürgerungstest
The examination center of the Landesverband der Volkshochschulen Schleswig-Holsteins e.V. informs you about the Einbürgerungstest (EBT). With the Einbürgerungstest, you demonstrate basic knowledge of the legal and social order and living conditions in Germany. This is important if you wish to obtain a permanent right of residence (settlement permit) or German Einbürgerungstest.
On the website of the examination center you will find dates and information on registration, costs and preparation for the Einbürgerungstest. If you have any questions, you can contact the examination center directly via phone or e-mail.
